CHÂteau Barbanau
27 hectares in Côtes de Provence and Cassis entirely biodynamic
Château Barbanau’s vineyard features a blend of grape varieties that meets the standards of the Côtes de Provence and Cassis appellations, with very old Rolle, Ugni, Clairette, Sémillon, Marsanne, and Sauvignon for the whites; fine Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cabernet for the reds; and elegant Cinsault, Grenache, and Syrah for the rosés. The estate is also adapting to climate change, notably by planting the white grape variety Bourboulenc, which is more drought-resistant.
With a vineyard management approach that is as non-interventionist as possible, the Barbanau Winery ( Château ) has been a pioneer in organic farming in Provence since 2008 and in biodynamic farming since 2018. In the spring, lambs graze on the pastures and enrich the soil. Plowing is kept to a minimum to preserve the micro-fauna and flora.
As soon as he arrived, Romain Tchenio made a point of planting long hedges, moving olive trees to act as windbreaks, multiplying cypress trees and introducing rare species and melliferous plants. The plots are named after the plants they contain and the animals that roam them.

Elegant, well-balanced wines
Full vinification with indigenous yeasts brings out the full aromatic potential of the terroir. Pressing is gentle and pigeage very limited for the reds, just to break the cap. Romain, true to his vision, introduces new containers and carefully controls temperatures to preserve aromatic freshness during fermentation.
