The history of Château Barbanau

Chateau Barbanau vineyards

Vines were first planted here by the Romans at Rocca Fortis, the ancestor of the old Château de Roquefort. In the 20th century, the estate belonged to the Barthélémy de Cassis family. Old photos show the ladies in full dress during the harvest in 1902.

Closer to home, in 1989, Lucien Cerciello, a high mountain guide, proposed to his wife Claude, the Bodin heiress of vineyards in Cassis, to return to the country. They bought Château Barbanau in Roquefort-la-Bédoule, then in ruins, relaunched it and succeeded in gaining local recognition. Their daughter Sophie and her husband Didier took over.

Our history

Over a century of history

At the end of 2022, Romain Tchenio, also looking for a career change, discovered the estate and it was an obvious choice. He took up the challenge and put down roots on the estate, where Lucien still lives.

He surrounded himself with passionate experts, restructured the vineyard, decided to build a new semi-buried winery and set about restoring this magnificent estate to its former glory.

Respect for the earth

Care for the environment with biodynamics

The vineyard has been restructured with a long-term vision in mind, with targeted replanting and the gradual introduction of adapted rootstocks. New work is being carried out, notably in forest management to prevent forest fires. Situated between two nature reserves, the estate is committed to preserving biodiversity. We favor natural grassing, annual grazing of sheep to weed and enrich the soil, and limited mechanization.
